Abstract

An evaluation at nursery stage of 56 wild accessions of 3 provenances of Amazon basin, Acre (AC), Rondonia (RO) and Mato Grosso (MT) of wild Hevea brasiliensis (Para Rubber) and 2 rubber commercial clones was carried out at the Regional Research Station of Rubber Research Institute of India located at Sukma , a drought prone area under dry sub humid region of Bastar district in centraleastern India to obtain information about potential of variability in quantitative traits .. Among the different accessions, girth ranged from 3.84 cm (AC 685) to 8.0 cm (RO 876), scion height 133.4 cm (AC 158) to 292.37 cm {RO 897), number of leaves 11.0 (AC 623) to 51.75 (RO 876) and leaf area from 85.49 cm' (MT 58) to 195.60 cm² (AC 623). The observations revealed wide inter and intra provenance variations for all the quantitative traits. The existence of high variability was evidenced by moderate to high estimates of phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation for the traits. High heritability was observed for girth and scion height. Among the three provenances, Rondonia exhibited superiority for most ofthe traits. Ajudicious selection ofthese promising diverse materials would be useful in future breeding programmes.

Abstract

The present paper documents the petrography, mineral chemistry and petrochemistry of the acid volcanics of St.Mary group of islands. These are essentially characterized by pyroxene bearing rhyolites with average 73.49 wt.% SiO₂. All the rhyolites from these islands are acmite normative, hence peralkaline with phenocrysts of zoned plagioclase and sometimes hypersthene/augite. There is depletion of LREE with moderate negative Eu anomaly. The enhancement of HFSE elements indicates their compatibility with continental crust. These rhyolites have high equilibrium temperature (915°C) at relatively lower oxygen fugacity (10^-16). The acidic lava flows are anorogenic, within plate rhyolites, generated during northern migration of Indian plate over Marion hotspot.

Abstract

Plasma arc cutting of metals is of recent origin and is widely employed in the cutting of stainless steels, special steels, non-ferrous metals and their alloys, thick sections of steel and even C.I. In oxygen cutting, the metal burns reacting with oxygen. Therefore, the speed of cutting of carbon steels for which it is widely used is limited by the speed of the chemical reaction of oxygen with iron and the speed with which the molten metal is blown away from the reaction zone.

Abstract

Residual stresses may be defined as those stresses which exist in a material free of external load, generally resulting from nonhomogeneous plastic deformation which may be introduced in many ways such as fabrication process, flame cutting, welding etc. During the flame cutting process, there is a rapid change in temperature, resulting in non uniform heating and cooling which not only introduces residual stresses but also causes changes in chemical composition of the material in the region of the edges of cut. When the heat is conducted to the surrounding parent material, rapid rates of cooling are encountered. In addition, the varying degree of affinity of iron and the various alloying elements in steel to oxygen gives rise to changes in the chemical composition of the material in the neighbourhood of the cutting area.
